Anthropology
Planning your Field Project
? Step 1: Below are three choices of activities students will select from in order to complete their
anthropological study: 1) Attend a cultural event (religious ceremony, cultural festival, etc.) or ethnic-specific location (ethnic grocery
store, cultural center, etc.) associated with a culture other than your own.
2) Interview someone from another culture than your own about a specific anthropological topic (different customs, kinship organizations, experiences in the United States, etc.).
3) Analyze the behaviors of individuals in a specific space (use of the bathroom, seating in buses, gender differences in class) from your own culture using anthropological techniques. *Alternate projects are possible with the permission of the instructor but must involve research conducted during the term*……………………………………
? Step 2: Identify a topic of interest and a specific question. On the date listed in the syllabus, you will turn in a 1-page typed document (5% of your final paper score) containing the following:
A) A description of the location where you plan to conduct your research and/or a description of the person/event
you are interviewing/visiting. B) A specific question that you are aiming to answer. C) An operational definition for terms used in your research (we will discuss this in class).
D) A brief description of the techniques you will use. If qualitative techniques are used, describe which will be used (survey, interview, life history) and how you will apply them. If quantitative techniques are used, describe how you will collect frequency data or use mapping in your project………………………………………………….
? Step 3: Carry out your research. This can be conducted whenever it is convenient for student but must occur between when your topic is approved and when you turn in your final paper. You should plan to spend a minimum of one hour conducting your research…………………………………………………….
? Step 4: On the date indicated in the syllabus, you will turn in your final draft of the project. This draft will be 3-5 pages in length and must follow all written guidelines from the previous page. The grade breakdown for your paper is listed below:
