Discussion Analysis of Person-Environment Interaction (7 pages)
We have learned in this course that person, environment, and time interact dynamically. Relationships are reconfigured as the multiple influences on human behavior ebb and flow. The actions of one person can only be understood in relation to the actions of other people and in relation to ever changing situations. The same person in a different environment, or the same environment with a different person, most likely will yield different behaviors.
One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest
Purpose of Discussion: The purpose of this discussion is to evaluate the effect that institutions/organizations have on human behavior.
Content of Discussion: How did the mental institution’s environment impact the clientele it served? Consider the following in your discussion:
(1) Social institutions are patterned ways of solving the problems and meeting the requirements of a particular society. Social welfare institutions (i.e. the mental hospital) were created to promote interdependence and provide assistance for issues of dependency. Discuss the mental hospital and what it did or did not do to promote interdependence and provide assistance for issues of dependency.
(2) Discuss the mental hospital environment in reference to the rules and procedures and its impact on the clientele.
(3) Discuss the mental hospital structure in reference to authority, decision-making, and formal power and how it impacted the clientele.
(4) Discuss the concept of deinstitutionalization in reference to those that suffer from mental illness. How can we influence communities to be more responsive to their needs and help those that suffer from mental illness to more effectively negotiate in organizations?
NOTE: Paper is to be typewritten (12-point font, 1 inch margins, double-spaced, pages numbered) and presented in a scholarly manner, well documented where appropriate with references to the supporting literature.
