Find a place on campus that you think is inaccessible to people with physical disabilities.

Instructions:
A.) Find a place on campus that you think is inaccessible to people with physical disabilities. Photograph the place that you find to be inaccessible. Take notes about the area around this place and what makes it inaccessible.

– I would like to see that you have tried to put yourself in the position of a person with a physical disability, and have tried to think through the things that might hinder your access to and interactions with the organization of K-State and its bounded group members. In your notes you should identify things such as surface changes i.e. raised or sloped pavement, pot holes etc. materials used i.e. pavement, gravel, asphalt, grass, etc., distance from parking to entry point). These are necessary observations that you need to make notes about, but I want you to go beyond these as well.

Place the photograph into a word document. Then write a two page essay answering the following questions:

1.) What is the surface area at your observation site like (remember detail is important)? What difficulties with this surface might someone in a wheel chair, on crutches, etc. have in trying to utilize this surface to gain entry into the building? Do changes in the weather affect your assessment of the accessibility of this surface area and building entry for people with physical disabilities, if so how? If not, explain why not.

2.) What are the area leading up to the entrance and the entrance area like at your observation site like (remember detail is important)? What difficulties might someone in a wheel chair, on crutches, etc. encounter when trying to access the entrance through the area leading up to it and with the entrance itself? Do changes in the weather affect your assessment of the accessibility of this area and entrance, if so how? If not, explain why not.

3.) Having identified the problematic aspects of the accessibility of your observation site to students and faculty with temporary and permanent physical disabilities, explain how these problematic aspects might impact student and faculty interactions with the organization of K-State, and with the bounded members of the organization.

4.) Has this assignment made you more aware of issues of accessibility that you were previously not aware of? If so, how (be specific)? If not, why (be specific)?
