Content Choose one celebrity, of any period (classic Hollywood, the 80s, today…) and any genre (sports star, reality TV, fashion model, MTV music star, politician…). The celebrity must be a single individual, rather than a group or part of a couple, and must be well enough known to have been talked about in several gossip blogs, magazines, entertainment shows, etc., preferably across a period of time (months, years). The goal is to answer, through research and original analysis, the following two questions: ? What is the “meaning” conveyed by this celebrity’s public image? What is the “myth” or narrative that the public tells about this celebrity as a result of the celebrity’s persona as communicated through gossip and entertainment communication sources? ? How does that meaning get communicated to the public? What specific details of the celebrity’s image, biography, experiences, and body of public work (films, guest appearances, paparazzi shots, etc.) contribute to conveying that image? Form Write an essay of ~1000 words following the usual academic conventions: an introduction ending with a clear thesis statement; unified and well developed body paragraphs that properly integrate quoted and paraphrased material; a brief concluding paragraph that does not simply repeat every point already made in the body; a Works Cited page (you may use APA or Chicago Style instead of MLA). The Research Process You must conduct both primary research and secondary research for this assignment. Secondary research includes using expert sources to support your claims about the issues being debated. You will need to use 5-8 secondary sources for this paper, found both through online searches and through library database searches. These sources will provide 1) details about the celebrity’s life and 2) an explanation of terms and concepts that you can use to build a critical framework for analysis. Primary research includes your own analysis of the celebrity’s public persona in order to illustrate your claims about the issues being debated. The essay needs to contain some original analysis, not simply summarize what the sources say.
