Fourth Topic- Other Policing Issues; Probation and Diversion (Drug, Veterans, Mental Health Courts)

Learning Objective– In response to this country’s climbing rate of incarceration, many jurisdictions have set up courts to deal with ‘special needs’ defendants, such as the mentally ill, veterans and the drug-addicted. These courts encourage diversion to civil rehabilitation facilities rather than criminal convictions. To the officer on the street and her supervisors, however, such suspects create special and compelling challenges regarding use of force, discretion in charging, etc.

Assignment- Do additional research, as appropriate, and submit a five page paper with your observations as to how police executives are dealing with these issues. A minimum of 5 resources/ References must be incoorperated into your paper
