Aim
The aim of this study will be to determine the stress, burnout and mental health related issues and problems that are common in the Angolan in the offshore industry.
Objectives
There are several objectives that this study will be aiming at gaining. The objectives include:
- Identifying the factors of stress, burnout and mental health problems facing people in the offshore industry in Angola
- Reviewing the measures that have currently been put in place with the intent of putting these problems under control
- Determine the level to which the existing measures have been effective in curbing the stress, burnout and mental health problems facing people in the offshore industry in Angola
- Proposing possible improvements in the strategies for curbing the stress, burnout and mental health problems facing people in the offshore industry in Angola
Research questions
There are a number of research questions that will guide the proceedings of this study. These research questions include:
- What are the factors of stress, burnout and mental health issues facing people in the offshore industry in Angola?
- Are these issues any different from the ones faced by those working in the other industries in the country?
- What are the factors that contribute to the factors of stress, burnout and mental health problems facing people in the offshore industry in Angola, and are these factors specifically for this industry only?
- What are the measures that are currently in place and what are the level of effectiveness of these measures in the reduction of the stress, burnout and mental health issues?
- What improvements can be made to the strategies for curbing the stress, burnout and mental health problems facing people in the offshore industry in Angola?
Context of the study
The offshore oil industry is among the biggest industries in Angola because almost 75% of the oil that is produced in the country is produced by this industry. The productivity of employees in the offshore industry is a strong determinant of its success. However, it should be noted that when employees are stressed, having burnout or mental health issues they are likely to be of a lower level of productivity. This is the main reason as to why the stress, burnout and mental health problems facing people in the offshore industry is a common concern to many stakeholders in this industry. Apart from the productivity issue, a common concern is the health and wellbeing of the laborers in the industry given the fact that they make more than 15% of the country’s population. Working in the offshore industry subject people to different circumstances and can lead to concerns such as
- Poor psychological health
- Non-voluntary early retirement
- Premature death
- Absenteeism
- Increased rates of insurance premiums
- Poor performance
- High rate of employee turnover
- Low productivity
- Dissatisfaction of workforce
- Unsatisfactory employee relations
- Increased number of accidents
- Drug and substance abuse
- Alcoholism
- Marital life instability
- Cumulative stress trauma litigation
The offshore industry in Angola is a highly lucrative one with hundreds of thousands of the people of Angola. The high number of labourers needed for this industry is an indication of the extent to which the working conditions in the industry should be put under review. The level to which the economy of Angola is dependent on the offshore industry is an indication that the productivity of the industry should always be taken seriously. There is no strategy that can be used in maximizing the productivity of this industry without the involvement of the maximization of the productivity of the workforces.
Methodology and timetable (1-5 years)
Data collection
There are three data collection methods that will be used for this research. These methods were document review, questionnaires, and interviews.
Document review
This method of data collection will involve the review of documents that relate to the mental health, stress, and burnout among those working in the offshore industry in Angola. There are several reports by the government and non-governmental organizations that might be of help in determining the situation of the workforce at the offshore industry in Angola. The most important thing about document review as a method of data collection is that it will provide information that has been collected for many years thus reducing the amount of time that will be needed in the collection of such information.
Questionnaires
Questionnaires will be important for the collection of the information direct from a sample of laborers from the industry. This will be a way through which the industry will be able to find the primary information of the experiences that the employees have when they work in the offshore industry in Angola. This is a factor that makes it easier for there to be a confirmation of the data that will be collected from the documents that will be review and the exact situation in the industry. The respondents in this method of data collection will be the laborers in the industry or those people who are connected to the laborers such as their families and those who are close to them.
Interview
Interviews will be used in the collection of more detailed and complex details about the situation of the workforce in the offshore industry in Angola. This will include labor analysis and human resource management specialists. It will also include individuals who have worked in the industry or the sector for a long time. This is because they will be in a position to know the details of the strategies that have been used in curbing the Stress, burnout and mental health issues facing people in the offshore industry in Angola. They will also know the extent to which the existing strategies have been effective and the areas that need to be changed in from a professional point of view.

Issues and problems
There are a number of challenges that are likely to be faced during this study. One of such challenges will be getting workforce data or the existing reports and documents on the workforce in the offshore industry. Despite the fact that some of this information can be sourced from the internet, more detailed ones will need to be sourced from the various involved stakeholders, something that might not be as easy as it sounds.
Another challenge is seen in the fact that it will not be easy to find laborers who will be willing to participate in such a study. This is an indication that the finding of the participants for willing the questionnaires might prove to be a headache. Determination of the accuracy of the details that will be filled will also be another challenge as far as this study is concerned.
It should be noted that the offshore industry in Angola is a rather sensitive one. The political factors that have always played a major role in the industry and the manner in which it functions might prove to be of high effect on the nature of the data that is collected.
The final problem is that collection of primary information might be unlikely because of the level of risks that are associated with the industry. Therefore, the study will have to depend on the secondary sources of information for a majority of the data that will be collected during the study.
Outcome and dissemination
The outcome of the study will be compiled a typed in the form of a report for the sake of easy presentation. There are various ways through which the findings of the study will get to the intended audience. The findings from this study will be communicated to the major participants including, the supervisors and the instructors. However, the dissemination of the findings from this study will not end there. There will be the publication of the report as an article in one of the journals that are associated with human resource management. A journal associated with the safety and well-being of laborers can also be appropriate for the dissemination of a report from a study such as this one.
