Citation Guidelines for Arguing Essay (Reflective Introduction for Portfolio)

We will follow current MLA guidelines for citations. The following information provides explanations and examples for citing your own work.

In-text citation:

Since your works cited will include multiple works by the same author (you), then your citation must tell the reader to which of your works you are referring. Give the title either in the text or in a parenthetical citation. In a parenthetical citation, give the full title only if it is brief; otherwise, shorten the title to the first one, two, or three main words (excluding a, an, or the).

Examples

In “Whatchoo Talkin Bout?” I was able to demonstrate both my ability to use descriptive language and my ability to analyze the meaning of an image when I discussed the layout of the advertisement (2).

My understanding of rhetorical situation is evident as I analyzed the sexism in the Folger’s coffee commercial by stating, “While it is clearly unacceptable by today’s standards for a husband to tell his wife that the women in the office were much better at making coffee, a general audience in the early 1960s wouldn’t have had a second thought about how he treated his wife” (“When Making Coffee” 3).

Basic format

The Same Author for two or more works

Give the author’s name only in the first entry. For the second and any subsequent works by the same author, substitute three hyphens for the author’s name, followed by a period. Within the set of entries by the same author, arrange the sources alphabetically by the first main word of the title, as in the example below.
