communication and personal identity

Comparison/Contrast: Identity Eassy

This is your opportunity to join the conversation regarding identity-based on the “communication and personal identity” chapter of your text which includes research on the generalized other.

Using the textbook and our discussions as a starting point you will write a compare contrast essay using textbook examples to support your argument. Your paper will be made up of at least five paragraph. Your first and last paragraphs will be your introduction and conclusion the three or more middle paragraphs or body paragraphs. make sure it’s about four pages long.

Address the following topics in your essay : new York City, the Bronx, darker, Chicago, Orlando, and London. ( all from the DRE 098 book)

The communication and personal identity chapter of your textbook defines the generalized other as collective of rule, roles, and attitude endorsed by the specific culture in which we live (pg 57). it goes on to say as we internalize the generalized others perspective we come to share many of the values and views of our society…social perspectives…changes in response to individual and collective efforts to weave new meaning in to the fabric of common life. (pg 59-60)

essentially, identity is never static. Culture is an important factor in shaping our identity but we never truly identify who we are because we are constantly shaped by our surroundings.

As you reflect back over the readings we’ve done this semester consider how the identity of the communities feature in the readings changed over the time and what affects that changed hat on the residence of and visit to those communities. Think about New York City, the bronx, dakar, chicago, orlando, and london. What differences do you see in the cities identifying then and now? How are the values different? How is the culture different? How are the people different? What’s the difference between how people on the outside view the city and how it really is?

Simon Worrall writes of london, this great city which like an ancient coral reef has gone on shifting and growing adapting itself to the needs and the reams other each new generation for nearly 2000 years (pg 42). The cities in our reading have shifted and the people have grown and adapted along with them. In your essay used three of our readings to discuss how the social perspectives have changed over time. Contrast the past to the present. References the “communication and personal identity” chapter as you begin your discussion of the generalized other and how new meaning is woven into the identity of the cities identified in our reading.
