Description

The first step in developing a competitive strategy is to conduct an analysis of the industry. In this
exercise your team will collaborate to conduct an industry analysis for Mother Bear’s Pizza (MBP) a
small local business near the IUB campus  http://www.motherbearspizza.com/ .  Consider the
Porter’s Five Forces model from Chapter 3: Q1-Q2 and write up an analysis explaining how each of
the forces could affect profitability and sustainability of the company based on whether you think
the forces are high or low. You will find some useful information in the case description to help with
the analysis. Where there isn’t enough information provided, you are free to make assumptions. For
example, no specific suppliers are mentioned in the case description but you can assume that MBP
must purchase food supplies to create its pies and run its business for hungry IU students.
Some Questions to Consider

1.  What would be considered a substitute product? Do you think the threat of substitute
products is high or low? How could this affect profitability of MBP’s food sales?
2.  Is the threat of new entrants high or low? Consider the size of MBP and the amount of
starting capital required.
3.  Do those supplying the foods, beverages, cleaning supplies, paper products etc. for MBP
have high or low bargaining power? How can that affect its profitability and sustainability?
4.  Do you think likely customers of MBP have high or low bargaining power?

Instructions and Submission

1.  The first page is a cover sheet for your document.  It should include your Team Name as
well as the names and IU usernames of all team members who participated.  Do NOT list
any team members who did not contribute to this project on this cover sheet.
2.  Prior to submission, rename the file to read TeamName_K201xP-A, replacing TeamName
with your team’s name.
3.  Go to your K201 Lecture section of Oncourse and click on the Upload Case Deliverables
link on the left.
4.  Click the Log in to an existing account link on the right, under the Continue button.
5.  Type your IU username and Passphrase, click Log In.
6.  Click the Continue button on the right
7.  Locate you team’s folder and click on the folder name.
Note: There are several pages of team folders so you may need to look through
several pages to find your team’s folder.
8.  Click the Upload button, browse for your team’s document and double-click the file to
upload. Note: Only one submission per team so you may wish to decide ahead of time who
will be responsible for submission. Ask him/her to email team members showing that the
work is submitted prior to the deadline.
