Scenario
You are employed as a learning and development specialist within the human resource department of a large organization. You have been given the following tasks to complete.
Task1: Time Assessment- Monday 12 January 2015
LO1:Understand learning theories and learning styles
You will be given a written timed assessment to check your understanding of the following theories. You will be required to:
1.1: Compare different learning styles
1.2: Explain the role of the learning curve and the importance of transferring learning to the workplace
1.3: Assess the contribution of learning styles and theories when planning and designing a learning event.
Assessment guidance
You must demonstrate your understanding of the following learning styles .
• Honey and Mumford 1986 – activists, reflectors, theorists and pragmatists
• Kolb’s learning style inventory and experiential learning cycle.
• The use of the Learning Curve when planning a training activity
You must also demonstrate your understanding of the requirements for effective learning, informal learning, workplace learning, self managed learning, continuous learning and development, the learning curve and the transfer of learning to the workplace.
Finally, you must understand the impact of learning styles and theories when planning and designing a learning event.

LO2: Be able to plan and design training and development
LO3: Be able to evaluate a training event
In Groups of 3, or 4; you are required to plan and design and evaluate a training and development activity for an organization of your choice.
2.1: Compare the training needs for staff at different levels in an organization – Produce a chart which identifies and compares the different levels of staff and their training needs. You must give examples of similarities and differences between the training needs at different levels.
2.2 : Assess the advantages and disadvantages of training methods used in an organization – You must produce a chart which clearly shows the advantages and disadvantages of the training methods used for example in your department, and make a judgement to show the value of these training methods in delivering effective training.
2.3: In groups of five plan and design a one day training and development activity for an organization of your choice. You will have to produce a 30 minute role play of a section of your training day and provide all the necessary resources for this sample session.
Produce evidence to show you have used a systematic approach to plan training and development for a training event of your choice. You might choose induction or health and safety for example. Set clear objectives for your training activity.
3.1 : Prepare an evaluation using suitable techniques such as questionnaires, observation, trainer/trainee feedback, customer comments, training audits, achievement of awards by trainees
3.2 : Carry out an evaluation of a training event
3.3 : Individually write a short review of the success of the evaluation methods used.

2.1 : Identify training needs, define the learning required, set objectives, plan and implement training, evaluate training
2.2 : Include on/off training methods, delivery methods (mentoring, coaching, action learning, assignments, projects, shadowing, secondments, training courses, conferences, seminars, e-learning, and outdoor development)
2.3 : Training and development methods include the following on/off the job training. Delivery methods include, mentoring, coaching, action learning, assignments, projects, shadowing, secondments, training courses, conferences, seminars, e-learning, outdoor development. Produce a plan which details the systematic approach adopted which must include the following steps, identify training needs, define the learning required, set objectives, plan and implement training. You must consider planning issues such as numbers, content, internal/external trainers, administration, the training budget, training costs
3.1: You should produce a detailed evaluation using the model suggested by Kirkpatrick which should include:
• what,
• why,
• when
• who
Evaluate the design, delivery and implementation. Consider the key stakeholders involved and affected by the training event. Evaluate the achievement of the set objectives.
3.2 : Use one or more of the following evaluation methods, questionnaires, observation, trainer/trainee feedback, customer comments.
3.3: Review the benefits and limitations of the evaluation methods used; this may be through questionnaires, observations, trainer and trainee feedback, customer comments, training audits, achievement of awards by trainees.
Indicators that could be used to evaluate the success of the training event might include, labour turnover, productivity measures, quality improvements, performance indicators such as sales figures, customer service feedback.
Consider the use of appropriate techniques and design your evaluation methods accordingly.
