data analysis – synchronic

data analysis – synchronic

In this coursework, you will use data to identify and discuss features of child language and of the
language adults use when talking with children. The data is a section of a transcript and a video of a
child and an adult talking, resourced from a data base called CHILDES. The transcript is the main
data, with the audio/video as support to help you during your analysis. The transcript is posted on
Blackboard for you. The link to the audio/video in CHILDES is on the first page of the transcript and
will also be posted on Blackboard. (I WILL ATTACH THIS FILE ONCE I PLACE MY ORDER)
? Your task is to identify and discuss four (4) different features of child language and four (4)
different features of the language adults use when talking with children.
? The selected features need to cover a range of linguistic areas, e.g. two phonological, one
lexical, one morpho-syntactic, etc.
? Discuss all of the features you identify, using examples from the transcripts to support your
analysis and argument. Make sure you have at least two examples of each feature to illustrate
it, e.g. two examples for fronting (two different words or two different sounds).
? Using your analysis, discuss the relevance of the child-adult interaction to the study of
language acquisition.
You might find it easiest to list each of the eight features and discuss them in turn, perhaps arranged
in order of importance. Alternatively, think about whether it would make sense to present your
findings grouped according to phonological, lexical, or morphological characteristics, for example;
or grouped according to child language versus adult language features.
You are strongly encouraged to use the video/audio when you work with the transcript to help you
identify the features. You are welcome to refer to the video/audio when commenting on the features
but it is not a requirement.( I DONT WANT ANY VIDEOS) Your minimum requirement is to work with the section of the transcript
provided (roughly, the first 25 minutes of the video). However, you may want ot consider whether
your discussion would benefit from a more thorough study of the entire data set, to provide you with
a better understanding of the linguistic characteristics and abilities of the speakers involved.
