Consumerism
Format:
-In first paragraph you have to give specific times, dates, place(s) of participant observation (no less then 2-3 times)
– TIP: go at different times to get a deeper perspective
Observation
– Need to go minimum of 2 times (3-4 times and different times even better), to beach, coffee house, event, Walmart vs Target, the mall, down town, etc….
-**HAND IN ALL FIELD NOTES and DIAGRAMS, which is a requirement
– attached to paper
-Observe; everything!!! I.e. people, environment, displays, compare and contrast places, dates and times, location, and all described appropriately
Tips:
– do not interact or talk to anyone, this is an observational project
-observe everything, such as people, environment, displays, format of store/restaurant/coffee house etc.., the lay out of items, the store workers, music, pricing, who is shopping/eating, who is
outside, the wording of items, WHY? etc..
– if you go to two places, compare them, compare times you visited etc..
– look at who is the target audience and even the items for sale
Reflections-Connecting the dots:
– ‘ah-ha’ moments, see the connections, (PLEASE NOTE: a minimum of 4 citations/referring/direct link to anthropological concepts from text or lecture)
– Critically think about what you are seeing, thinking (The foundation of critical thinking is to be open to new or existing information and not just accepting it. To question is the most important
part of critical thinking.)
– meaning in what you observed
– Culture and play; toys/sports
