(THIS IS AN EXAMPLE OF WHAT I NEED)

Scene: Kuwait is an Arab country that is located in the northeastern edge of the Arabian Desert. Khabari Al Awazem Crossing, Kuwait is a small military base located 10 km from the southern border of Iraq. The Khabari Al Awazem Crossing has been the gateway for the passage of troops, equipment, and supplies, between Iraq and Kuwait during Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation New Dawn. Tempters in at Khabari Al Awazem Crossing during the summer months range from 117 to 125 degrees Fahrenheit. Khabari Al Awazem Crossing is also subjected to lots of sandstorms, because it is bordered by 893,120 sq mi of one of the largest continuous bodies of sand in the world.

On Friday, March 25th, 2011, Khabari Al Awazem Crossing was hit by a Massive black sand storm turns day into night, with winds stretching beyond 70 knots. It is described by many as a black Friday, because the wall of sand was so high up into the sky that blacked out the sun and turned a sunny day into night. In a matter of minutes, the massive wall of sand blacked out the sun and swept through the site, sand blasting everything in its path. The communications site located on Khabari Al Awazem Crossing suffered major damage. The brave men and woman on duty at the Khabari Al Awazem Crossing communications center endured the massive onslaught of sand and wind to secure their communications array and restore tactical communication to working order.

Key Actions: The massive sand storm with 70 knot winds hit the communications platform with such force, that it separated the High Wind Radome Tent from the support deck that supports the communications array. The tent traveled 30 feet before it crashed into the 8 foot high security fence. The tents aluminum frame was twisted around portions of the fencing, and was damaged beyond repair. The communications array took the full force of the storm, but it could not with stand the continuous bombardment of sand and flying debris. The flying debris severed the power cables, bent both actuator arms, and damaged the face of the array to such a state, that the array was no longer operational.

Very strong atmospheric surface winds from the northwest of Iraq, swept across the Arabian Desert with such force, that it moved entire sand dunes, to create a massive wall of sand that stretched across the sky. The massive sand storm hit the communications platform with such force, that it separated the Tent from the wooden deck that supports the communications array, damaged the communications array making it unusable, and causing a communications blackout.

The communications team went out in the raging sand storm to access the damage of the site, and devise a plan to restore communications. The team put the array in the “bird bath position” with strapping, secured sand bags to steady the wind barriers and detached the cables from the array to prevent further damage. Once the array was safely secured to the support deck, the team started troubleshooting the communication equipment power issues.  It was determined that loss of power to the Control Center equipment had been caused by damage to the array’s interconnect cables when the High Wind Radome Tent was displaced, causing the circuit breakers on the UPS equipment to trip. The remaining cables were removed and UPS equipment was successfully reset.  Power was restored to all the communications equipment. Control Center engineers Ben Alanis and John Polis restored communications over the secondary microwave network, and verified that we were successfully back on the tactical communications grid.

Key Participants: Khabari Al Awazem Crossing Communications Team consisted of Keith Dobson, Benjamin Alanis, John Polis, Elizabeth Key, William “Bill” Davis, and Reginald Hall.

Key lines of dialogue: Sandstorms are among the most violent and unpredictable forces of nature. Very strong atmospheric surface winds lift entire sand dunes into the air, unleashing a turbulent, suffocating cloud of sand particulates and reducing visibility to almost nothing in a matter of seconds. Massive sandstorms can create large tsunami size walls of sand that stretched across the sky, and are capable of causing property damage, injuries, and death.

Feelings: Before the sandstorm hit, I was calm, relaxed, and working on my weekly status reports. During the sandstorm, I was excited; my adrenaline levels were high, and I was very focused on the situation. Most of my team members were on edge as well, but they remained focused on the tasks they were performing. After the sandstorm was over, my team members and I were still charged up and on edge for several weeks. We have had several sandstorms over the past eighteen months, but nothing to this size and scale.

My team members and I feel that this is one experience that we will never forget. We learned that our disaster recovery plan needs a little adjustment to account for massive sandstorms; we need to secure the High Wind Radome Tent to a solid structure that requires a crane to lift it, and to reinforce the communications array and shield the power cables. We also learned that we need to stay prepared and safe, because sandstorms can develop in am matter of minutes and can cause massive damage.

Sensory details: On Friday afternoon, March 25th, 2011, Khabari Al Awazem Crossing, Kuwait was hit by a Massive sandstorm. The winds were clocked at speeds beyond 70 knots, and the wall of sand were so high up into the sky that they blocked out the sun and turned day into night.

  • Sight: The sky was filled with tan colored dust; the sky was a faded orange color
  • Sound: Sounds like a blizzard, rain storm with high winds
  • Smell: The air has a smell of musty dust, wet dirt
  • Taste: The sand tasted like dirt, powder
  • Touch: Mouth was dry and felt like gritty sandpaper, it felt like fine sandpaper as it touched my skin

Comparison: The sky was a faded orange color, like a slice of stale velvetia cheese

Evaluation: The easiest of the five senses to describe was sight. I had never experienced a sandstorm of that magnitude, and I started visually started recording everything without even thinking about it. While events were unfolding, I found myself documenting what I saw, how I felt, what it smelt like and what it tasted like. The most difficult of the five senses to describe about my experience is how it sounded. I heard so many different sounds; it was hard for me to place them. Even today, when I review the video and the photos we took, I can remember how I felt, what it smelt like, and what I say, but I can’t pin point a specific sound that reminds me of that day. The experience was scary, but extremely exciting.
