Write and deliver a persuasive public speech in which you argue firstly, the relevance of the issue for contemporary
societies and secondly, how the Australian community should respond to the issue.
This task requires you to apply your knowledge of the genre of the formal persuasive speech, your understanding of
persuasive language and the aesthetic effects it can create for audiences by speaking about an issue that your class novel
explores.
TASK CONTENT
GENRE: Public Speech
PURPOSE: To analyse and expose the way language and texts connect to people, issues and events
CONTEXT: A public forum composed of young Australians interested in texts and the social issues and problems
they raise.
AUDIENCE: Other English students
Rs & Rs: As the speaker, you are the expert information giver. You are to examine the political and personal
implications of texts and their role in shaping beliefs about issues, groups and individuals.
