Overview
For this project, you will view Bend It Like Beckham, a film that introduces two fictional families facing many challenges. Think of this film as a sort of case study, providing a window on family dynamics that you might encounter in the practice of therapy and counseling. You will write an 4–5 page paper using the perspectives you have learned in the course to analyze this family’s interactions, triumphs, and tribulations.
The families in Bend It Like Beckham face challenges in cultural acculturation and assimilation. Conflicts emerge between the conservative, traditional parents and their teenaged daughters, who are on the brink of adulthood. There is also an adult daughter leaving the family to begin a new life in marriage. You will apply the following theoretical perspectives to your analysis of these families:
Natural systems theory.
Cybernetics theory.
Communication theory.
Language systems theory.
Project Content
Write an 4–5 page paper applying the theoretical perspectives examined in the course to the family interactions and themes you observe in Bend It Like Beckham. Incorporate research from the field, using a minimum of eight resources, to support your responses to the following questions and topics.
To gain an understanding of multiple perspectives, articulate each family’s main challenges or problems, from the viewpoint of each family member.
Imagine you are interviewing this family.
Who do you think you would connect with most easily? Who would you have the most difficulty connecting with and why? Self-reflect on your response. Comment on the personal beliefs or values that might be obstacles for you.
How would you know if your conflicted beliefs or values have escalated to the point of needing to seek supervision or a referral for the client family?
Examine the family dynamics from the perspectives of each of the following theories. Be sure to specifically address the questions or topics provided for each.
Natural systems theory—Use natural systems theory to articulate the following:
Explain the concept of triangles, as developed from natural systems theory and Murray Bowen’s theory. Provide two examples from the film and describe the relational tension that required the need for a triangle to form.
Cybernetics theory—Use the cybernetics perspective to articulate the following:
Describe a scene in the movie that was a turning point for each family when a second-order change occurred.
Describe the paradigm changes that occurred in each family and the cultural rules that gave way and allowed the "new normal" in the rules and roles that now regulate the family.
Circular questioning is based on the Milan approach, which is founded in cybernetics and communication theory. Use this approach to identify 4–5 circular questions you would ask in your interview of each family and provide a rationale for your questions.
Communication theory—Use communication theory to articulate the following:
Provide examples of the following two relationship styles and explain your rationale for each example:
Complementary.
Symmetrical.
Identify at least two instances of a report and command situation.
Based on the actions of the family member, describe what you think the command was in each instance.
Language systems theory—Use the key concept of the language systems that the larger cultural context influences the family to answer the following:
Describe the themes in both the dominant cultural narratives, that is Indian and British, that influence the family and family life. Discuss how these themes influence each family member.
Analyze how multicultural society affects couples and families.
In a separate conclusion section, provide a one-page summary of what you learned about applying a systemic framework to family counseling. Finally, describe how this project impacted you personally and professionally.
Project Objectives
To successfully complete this project, you will be expected to:
Analyze the philosophical and theoretical foundations of family counseling/therapy.
Integrate and apply marriage and family counseling/therapy core competencies and standards.
Integrate and apply family counseling/therapy principles and approaches to systemic clinical assessment and case conceptualization.
Evaluate a family from a multicultural perspective, demonstrating consideration of cultural diversity.
