Management Styles
Autocratic Management Style
In any given workplace, there are various styles of management categories. In most cases, the management categories styles affect an employees’ production. It is upon the company’s management to determine what type of management style that is best for suited for the company. One of the most common management styles is the autocratic style of management. The autocratic management style is the type of management whereby, the manager makes his own decisions and ideas without asking for opinions or consultations from other parties involved. This type of management style is almost equal to dictatorship while the manager serves as a dictator during the whole process. In most cases, the manager gives orders and takes total control of the whole work situation at the work place. Despite its dictatorship nature, the work gets done on time without much hustles form the workers. The management style is also advantageous because the company uses only few workers to carry out most activities in a given work situation. There would also be less conflicting ideas during decision-making processes because the manager makes the final decision.
This type of management style is characterized by its high increase in turn over by the employees as most of the employees look for chances and opportunities to make impact. This method of management style best works in situations where quick decisions ought to be made. The disadvantage with this type of management style is that, it easily affects the parties, which are involved hence; it does not work for long periods. Some of the areas, which the management style best suits include the military or prison set up. This type of management style is completely different from the laissez-faire management style because it does not take a lot of time to complete any given project or task because the manager makes quick decisions. To some extent, the management style will affect the employees because they get no chance to develop their leadership skills because the manager gives no freedom.
Democratic management style
Democratic management style is a type of management style whereby the manager shares or delegates tasks and work among his staff. The democratic system of management depends on competency from the staff members in performing the company’s duties and tasks effectively. This management style method is beneficial to employees because of its working environment. The management style involves workers in decision making during the business hence it creates good rapport between the workers and the company’s’ management. Workers feel that they play an important part within the organization. Compared to the autocratic management set up, the democratic setting produces better results.
Despite its advantages, the democratic management style has various disadvantages when it comes to decision-making processes and performance of duties. In some cases, some members may tend to depend on other staff members on in case the work in not properly performed. Most of the workers take the advantage of having the authority to make decisions by questioning fellow workers and wrongfully making decisions. Unlike the Autocratic management style, this type of management style wastes a lot of time. Collective decision-making may waste time because the workers may have different decisions regarding the tasks they are to undertake. This will in turn waste time before final decisions are made. The workers also have the right to ask the management questions and argue decision before final decisions are made. Finally, the manager will be like a puppet because he cannot make decisions without consulting his staff and the consulting team. This may negatively affect production or his performance.
Laissez Faire management style
This type of management style is almost similar to the democratic management style because the workers have the right to make their own decisions and complete tasks on their own ways. Avery et al. (20-25) states that, organizational managers do not give directives on how the organization’s work needs to be done. The manager only gives guidance and answer questions in case his staff are stuck. The advantage of this type of management is that, it helps in developing managerial skills among the workers. The working staff will also end forming a strong team at the end. The biggest disadvantage of this type of management is that, the style is conflict prone amongst staff members. Some members might take advantage of others by delegating their roles to junior workers (Tannebaum & Schmidt 2003). Other staff members may tend to neglect roles given to them by their bosses because the system is lenient. Compared to the autocratic and democratic management style, the Laissez Faire management style nurtures most employees into leaders.
There are various styles of management with each management style applying well to the type of situations at hand and a business environment. In order to have an effective management style in an organization, the management will have to borrow ideas from the different management styles then form a better working environment with his team members. During the creation of my own management style, I will make use of the autocratic style and the laissez-faire style. With these two systems, I will manage to give my workers freedom at work during decision-making. At the same time, I will weigh up decisions and come up with the final say. I will also use part of the democratic management style whereby, I will be sharing work to my staff through delegation systems. This will enable me to have more time to work on other company projects while I allow my workers the freedom to work on their tasks.
