– Make sure that you provide explanations for all of your statements. I.e. instead of simply stating “this painting uses a primary color scheme”, you should explain that “this painting uses a primary color scheme: blue is prominent in the background’s sky and water, red is evident in the man on the left’s sash, and the figure on the right rear wears a yellow hat.”
— Make sure that you have included all the visual elements that apply:
* Line– implied or actual
* Shape– geometric or organic
* Color (and value!)– are there recognizable color schemes? Complimentary colors? Primary or secondary colors, etc.?
* Light
* Mass– in 2-dimensions or 3?
* Space—is there a sense of implied depth? How does the artist achieve this? Some terms to remember: overlapping, diminishing scale, vertical placement, atmospheric perspective and linear perspective.
* Motion—implied or actual
StarsFor each visual element you discuss, explain to what end it is used– in other words, what is the effect of this visual element in the work of art? Or, why did the artist choose to use it this way?
— Make sure that you have included all of the principles of design that apply:
* Unity
* Variety
* Repetition
* Rhythm– know the difference between repetition and rhythm! Which one, if any, or both, applies to the work of art?
* Scale
* Proportion– remember how to use this term: “…in proportion to…”
* Balance—asymmetrical or symmetrical? Make sure to specify!
* Emphasis– also, focal point. If you use these terms, make sure to explain how the artist achieves an area of emphasis or focal point!
* Contrast
* Directional forces
StarsFor each principle of design you discuss, explain to what end it is used– in other words, what is the effect of this principle of design in the work of art? Or, why did the artist choose to use it this way?
