Extra Credit Assignment Information

Step 1. Select an article.
Use the Article Selection file to find a few articles on the list that interest you. There are 25 articles on the list. The articles are recent articles published in the Human Resource Management Journal. The articles are available to you through NAU’s online access to the EBSCO database, Business Source Complete. Scan the article titles and look up the abstracts.

Use the sign-up sheet posted on the door of my office to indicate which article you have selected. Do not email your article selections to me. I will post the sign-up sheet on my door on Monday, December 08, 2014.
Each student completing this assignment must select his/her own article to review and summarize. If another student has already signed-up for an article that interests you, you will need to make another choice from the list.

Step 2. Read the article.
Note: The articles are research articles written in a scientific writing style. Reading research articles can be frustrating unless you are familiar with the format and style. Most research articles have the following major sections: Introduction, Methods, Results, and Discussion.
Skim over the whole article first. Briefly look at each section. Highlight key sentences or key points from each main section.

Expect that you probably won’t fully understand the article the first time you read it. You will have to read it several times before you can summarize it in your own words.
As you re-read the article, take some notes in your own words. Digest the information, don’t swallow it whole. Avoid writing out your notes in complete sentences.

Step 3. Write the summary.
Begin by reading your notes to get an overview and to check your understanding. If you can’t summarize a piece in your own words, go back and read until you understand it enough to explain it in your own words.
Write a draft. Use the Summary Sheet Template provided on the next page. Then, edit your draft.
· Stay focused. Cut out redundant or less important information.
· Check your writing style. Be clear and organized; don’t make the reader struggle to understand you.
· Proofread. Check for spelling, grammar, punctuation and typographical errors.
· Ask someone else to read your paper. They will catch things you miss.
· Use turnitin to check your work. Make corrections and finalize your paper.
· Single-space; Times New Roman, 12 pt. font; narrow margins (0.5 all around)

Paragraph Five: Summarize the results of the study. What did the researchers find? Did the data support the stated hypotheses? (Use the results and discussion section for this.)

Conclusion

Paragraph Six: Include why this article interested you and how it related to you and/or the HRM course material. Can the study be practical/helpful? To whom and why?
