taking a position the application of literary theory

For this research assignment, you will be choosing two literary theories to help you explore at least three (3) different works from our texts to support your position. In order to support your position, you will use one credible literary theorists to support your interpretation and one credible literary theorist who disagrees and has a different point of view. In addition, all papers will have a Rogerian Thesis statement so that everyone acknowledges and shows why another position is valid and creditable, and then, you will show why the other literary theory you have selected is a better way to read and understand your three pieces of literature.

Sample Rogerian Thesis Statement: Although Marxist theory can be helpful in analyzing a variety of literary works about women, Feminist critics have a far better angle on interpreting works about women, especially in works such as “ Rooming Houses are Like Old Women,” by Audre Lorde, “The Yellow Wallpaper” by Charlotte Perkins Gilman, and A Doll House by Henrik Ibsen.

Write a formal academic essay in which you carry out the following tasks:

In the introduction, accurately and effectively introduce the focus of your essay and the texts you will be discussing

Establish a clear, specific Rogerian thesis that provides your stance on the question above. It should reflect the structure of your paper.

In the body of the essay, include evidence from the texts and videos we’ve encountered in this class to support your thesis.

In the conclusion, comment on the significance of your essay and the topic at hand.

Literary Analysis Requirements:

As you write your essay, do the following:

Audience: Write the paper as if addressing an educated reader unfamiliar with the texts.

Evidence: Present evidence from what we’ve read and watched to support your thesis. Use quotations and paraphrasing when appropriate and include MLA in-text citations.

Structure: Use an effective structure that carefully guides the reader from one idea to the next. Pay careful attention to transitions between ideas and paragraphs

Sources: Use books, and online journal articles by published literary critics who are associated with various literary theories.

The Number of Sources Required: All together, students will use at least 5 (five) sources, which include your three pieces, and two pieces by literary theorists. The literary theorists and articles can be found online at the Grossmont College library. The best place to start looking is in the databases under literary sources and or literary sources plus.

Presentation: Edit your paper thoroughly so that sentences are readable and appropriate for an academic audience.Use proper MLA format.
