It is undeniable that social networking sites such as Facebook and Instagram have had an immense effect on romantic relationships. We live in a digital era where everything is linked to the internet in one way or another. Everything we do in communication is somehow linked to the internet. The emergence of the internet paved the way for social media applications to communicate and socialize. Social media applications have both positive and negative effects on romantic relationships.

I feel that it is possible and impossible to keep a relationship private on social media platforms. I feel that the decision solely depends on an individual. While some people prefer to keep their relationships away from social media, some individuals are okay with posting their partners on social media. I feel it is best to keep romantic relationships away from social media as I am more reserved. I’m not particularly eager to parade my other half on social media because I believe that it helps avoid unnecessary attention from netizens, which can sometimes have a negative effect on a relationship. I think privacy matters because it keeps the parties involved from outside interference from third parties. I believe that a relationship is between two people; hence there is no need to keep posting each other on social media for everybody to see and that what matters is our commitment to each other.

Without a doubt, social networking sites such as Facebook and Instagram have brought more opportunities for infidelity and cheating. When partners use social media such as Instagram and Facebook, they are likely to interact and virtually meet with many people. Applications such as Instagram are photograph and video applications, meaning they are rather visual. Engagements on Instagram are through features such as likely, commenting, and reacting. This gives the users an almost a real interaction experience with their followers. Additionally, society has transformed so much that people are moving towards using subscription services applications where people post explicit content. This kind of exposure increases the chances of cheating among spouses. In my opinion, the only benefit of social media when it comes to social media is the preservation of memories. In most cases, people who parade their relationships on social media to prove points to people or to chase fame rarely have lasting relationships. However, if they do it for the right reasons, they are likely to have a lasting relationship. They can post photos and videos as a digital album to remind them about their relationships in years to come.
