Father Paneloux is a Jesuit priest in Oran. Early during the epidemic, he delivers a sermon to his confused, frightened congregation declaring that the plague is a God-sent punishment for their sins. As the plague rages on, he modifies this stance, seeing the Plague as a supreme test of faith. The actions of Paneloux are based on what he perceives as a generation that is more focused on their fears that made them lose faith. In a time of the plague, Paneloux seeks to reassure the people that God is supreme and still loves them in their conditions. One of the most evident aspects of the books is that the actions of Paneloux are tied to his faith and believe in God. However, he appears to focus on a derived value for connecting the people to God even in a time when they were in fear and agony. In fact. Paneloux describes the plague as a call from God for people to med their ways and reconnect with the creator.

The story carries a lot of symbolism where the fear and worries of the people are compared to a force that overcomes hope and strive for rebuilding. Full of faith and vision, Paneloux seeks God’s mercy over the people who are already in a lot of anguish (Gale, 2015). He pleads with God to show mercy on Jacques’ suffering, “My God, spare this child!” based on Paneloux’s beliefs, he is in search for peace for his people but also understands that god’s hand and actions are well overdue. Paneloux in his place a religious leader seeks to strike a balance by showing the people that they have to repent but also give them hope that God still loves them. The narrative driven by Paneloux is well hinged on matters of faith and the life that the people lived. He appears to be in pain in trying to reconcile the peoples’ fears and their faith in God that by the time the plague intensified appeared to have bene lost (Bentley, 2020). The priest interprets the sudden plague as just punishment for the sins of his congregation. He is vividly adamant during his sermon and further confuses an already puzzled, fearful populace.

The people who by this time seek consolation in times of fear have only Paneloux to look up to for encouragement. However, the priest is adamant to sweep the sins of the people under the carpet and stands his ground by telling them that God is angry for their sins. He goes ahead to seek peace with his past where he regrets not being strong in considering sin that maybe would have saved the people the anguish brought by the plague (Gale, 2015). In addition, Paneloux seeks to show the people where they have failed but also fears that the hard headed people will not listen. Paneloux is seen as an unstable man who takes sides based on the situation.

In his own view, the suffering and the anguish that people are going through was extreme and even consoles with one of his peers who lost a boy. He believes that the children should not innocently suffer for sins they never committed. Rieux even appears to have a very good relation with the priest after his boy’s death (Bentley, 2020). The two are a symbol of different forces that came into agreement in times of disaster as shown y their different beliefs. Just like in the time of plague, Paneloux is sure that matters of faith and suffering are very distinct and comes down to individual’s perception. As a priest, Paneloux derives happiness in seeing people and a good life but the plague came and distorted all this flow of life.
