Factors leading to Group Formation

The group formation occurred due to certain factors. The first one was shared values, cultures, interests and norms. In the college, we needed people to associate with, to share experiences and social needs. At the time of graduation, there was substantial culture shock, given the multicultural society that the university was. As such we came together, people who spoke the same language, having similar cultures and values (Burton B. K., 2012). This was a way of reducing the disorientation that characterized the initial encounter with the university.

The time of Social Facilitation

The social facilitation process occurred when we had the first meeting to discuss the chances of forming a viable group to look into the interest of the members. At this point, it was inevitable that we had to forge ahead with the group.

Situation of Group think

Our group happened to be of the minority, a culture that was not quite dominant in the college. During the campus politics, we were apparently left out because we had little votes to contribute. This made us to come together and think of how to protect our own interests. This is the situation that led to the group think.

Group Polarization

Group polarization occurs when the opinions and decisions of the group members become more extreme than the normal ones (Burton B. K., 2012). In this group, the polarization happened after one discussion on ethnicity. There was concern from outside that the group was ethnically instigated. After this discussion, group members rose up and defended their attitudes more strongly than they had ever done.

Improving Group performance

The performance of the group can be improved by holding regular meetings to discuss the way forward and factors affecting the group.
