What does the allegory reveal to us about Plato’s understanding about the role, aim and purpose of education?
Plato compares uneducated people to inmates chained in a cave who are unable to turn their heads. They can only see the cave’s wall. Behind them, a fire is raging. Between the fire and the prisoners, there is a parapet where puppeteers can walk. The marionettes behind the prisoners are holding puppets that cast shadows on the cave wall. The prisoners are unable to see the marionettes or the real objects hidden behind them.
