Computers are electronic devices with ability of storing, processing, analyzing, and retrieving data stored in them. Computer systems have developed over many years with advances in technology. Computer technology in our daily use finds its origin in the oldest computing systems such as slide rules and abacus. The change of computers gets traced back to punch cards and calculators, which are some of the oldest devices of computing (Shell-Gellasch, Jardine & Mathematical Association of America, 2005). Analog devices of computing changed into digital information processors. For several years after 1960, when third world computer generation evolved, desktop computers remained popular for business and personal use. Research in this field progressed giving birth to development of palmtops, laptops, PDAS, and tablet PCs (Morley & Parker, 2012). Today, computers serve as personal digital assistants. Their miniature size gives them portability, thus increasing convenience for use. As computers have the abilities of operating on batteries, they give users mobile computing capabilities. The question is, how has this affected peoples’ lives? People stay connected to the world. Work today does not depend on site. This paper explores influence of computers on one’s daily life. It specifically touches on computer use in personal life, workplace, and education (Swedin & Ferro, 2005).

In the past, people used computers for calculating small sums pertaining transactions. People use computers today for managing their daily activities. Computers get used for storing important personal information. People use computers for storing data on various tasks. Landlords use computers for keeping data about their tenants; names, rents, and much more. People use computers as tools for socializing with other people around the world. With emergence of the internet, the world has become a global village. Computers networks make it possible from different parts of the world interact and socializing (Morley, 2011).

At workplace, people use computers for various operations. Computers get used in sharing information within a company. Computers get used as databases. Important information for a company gets stored using special computers called servers. Information is then retrieved any time. The computers manage the sharing of information among the various employees in a workplace. Management of files is the work of computers. Computers are also used in management of multiple user accounts and user profiles, and hence providing security to company information. Some computers support multitasking and multi-user operations making work easier. Most business operations today take place through computers. Many companies have commercialized their operations through the internet; advertising, marketing, selling, and much more (Morley & Parker, 2008).

In education, computers get used for various operations. Students use computers for learning. Information about various disciplines fills the internet. Students can get any form of information they need on the internet. Some examinations need computers for their execution. Educational institutions store information about their students in computers. This is because computers better processing speed than any other means. Laptops are good learning tools. Some institutions of learning offer free wireless networks. Students use their laptops in accessing the internet and hence better their learning (Gipp, 2008).

From the above discussion, it is clear that computers have many applications that are very important in the lives of human beings. Computers have evolved over many years with one main purpose; improving human life. Computers are very vital in education, workplace, and personal lives. In all, computers play a very big role in the lives on human beings.
