Through thick and thin

The society in which we live in is always concerned with comparing and contrasting different aspects of humanity. People tend to compare and contrast things in relation to their beliefs and culture however; media has got a big role in influencing how people make decisions concerning their humanity. In making the comparisons and contrasts, biases arise because each opponent wants to take the better position in the society than the other. Humanity aspects that the society revolves around in comparison and contrast are based on social symbolism and they include, thin and fat and white and brown. In this essay we shall look at the comparison and contrast of thin and fat humanity aspects and how the society treats each kind of personality.

According to Suzanne Britt Jordan, fat people have got many advantages than thin people. She argues that thin people are not fun for they do not how to goof off; they are downers, hard and mean at younger age, believe in logic, and go straight to the point of the matter. They are oppressing, expounding, pricking and inquisitive. On the other hand she characterizes fat people as nice, aware that life is illogical and unfair, understand every thing about the mystery of life, are convivial, and they like everybody even if irregular and acne. They gap, laugh nervously, laugh, galumph, gossip and gyrate. Further, she argues that fat people are generous, giving, gluttonous, gallant and giving. She thinks that thin people are ever serious, never make jokes, always busy and never stand still, and are like iron hardy and not soft. She talks much of the nice personalities of fat people than their bad personalities. Those nice personalities of fat people are just given to demonstrate that fat people also have advantages which many people don’t see since they knew that fat is un attractive. The story is intended to impose a very good point to the readers that thin people are not perfect and that there is always incompleteness within people. God created people differently with different weaknesses and strengths thus it should be understood that thin is thin and fat is fat and both have strengths and weaknesses.

Media has made the society to believe and develop various perspectives about thin and fat people. For instance people say that “fat is sexy”.” Fat is more enjoyable.” This is intended to encourage fat people while offending skinny people. Skinny people are often advised to eat more so that they can be come fat. But that is not the case. Slim people are naturally slim and they eat well. The fact that they are not fat does not mean that they are not eating well. On the other hand fat people are criticized to be obese, and unattractive. Thus they are advised to reduce weight by eating less. Just as it is difficult for the slim people to gain weight is the same for the fat people to loose weight. This clearly shows that fat or thin has nothing to do with human qualities. Fat people can have the same qualities like those of thin people and vice versa (Park, Sung-Yeon 2005, 495).

Another stereotype in the society is believed that, woman who are slim portray civilization while fat or obese women portray uncivilization and unattractiveness. Women are mostly affected with the society’s beliefs of humanity aspect of being fat or thin. Women feel that they are not attractive especially when they don’t look like “photoshopped” models. Mass media is the one that brings all this because it tells us what to eat, wear, and buy and how to look. And all advertisements use standardized ideal of beauty to make sales.

In conclusion, the artist understands all the flaws, the mistakes and the skipped processes while making a painting. God is the maker of people both fat and thin so is the only one who understands the flaws they have. But many people don’t realize that they don’t look bad at all, and that they are not ugly to other because those others are not aware of their flaws. Thus, whether thin or fat each person has strengths and weaknesses and both matter to the society.
