Tourism is an industry that provides travel for fun, business and leisure purposes to people away from their own homes. Tourism has become a popular global vacation and economic activity. This essay will discuss various types, benefits, positive and negative effects of tourism as an industry in modern world.

Tourism can be categorized as follows; Domestic tourism: the tourism of resident visitors within the economic territory of the country of reference, Sustainable tourism: the tourism that conserves resources to maintain their long-term viability by meeting the triple bottom line of social responsibility, economic health and ecological protection. Global tourism: the combination of alternative and mass tourism that involves both residents and non-residents travelling within or out of their home country. Mass tourism: forms a large segment of global tourism where a country focuses its attention on tourism sector.

Tourism is the world’s leading industry and creator of jobs in the global economy. It has made positive contributions among others improvement of a wide range of infrastructure services required such as roads, air navigation, airport and railheads and improved recreational facilities and catering facilities such as hotels, restaurants, shops. Besides, tourism has also promoted international relationships among states globally and their economic growth rate.

Everything always has two sides: good and bad point and so does tourism. Among the negative effects of tourism are traffic and people congestion and environmental damage. The more tourists come to an area, the more congested an area becomes. Concomitantly, some large multinational corporations run after their profit despite of ruining the environment. As a result, the natural environment would be threatened. In addition, exploiting the tourist industry can lead to the cultural degradation.

Tourism industry is fundamental for a country’s economic growth. It is so unpredictable in today’s human race and any changes, whether social, economic, environmental, political, cultural or religious can have a counter effect on the trends of the industry.
