Practicum experience

A nursing practicum involves individuals incorporating what they have already learned in class under the supervision of a mentor (Ferrell & Coyle, 2010).The individual does this in health care setting. In the practicum, effective mentorship is crucial due to lack of experience for the nurses to be. The frustrations that may result from this may result in some potential nurses quitting. One objective of my nursing practicum involves ensuring quality and effective care of patients in my direct encounter with them. During my nursing practicum, I am supposed to have a direct patient care under supervision and even assist in the diagnosis. This practicum will also be a part of a study that will show the importance of mentorship on new nurses. I will specialize in providing EKGs, blood draws, wound care, IV therapy and minor surgeries.

One of my objectives in this practicum is to establish the effectiveness of implementation of a nursing mentorship program on recruitment and retention. Another objective of my practicum will be to provide qualitative insights on the mentor- mentee relationship. This will include the nursing orientation introducing the mentorship program, how the faculty perceives the program, sessions of the program and leadership styles incorporated during the implementation…

The focus of this course is to implement, evaluate and disseminate an evidence based project. The project’s basis is evidence based mentorship program. Due to increased shortages of nurses, it is important to develop a mentorship program to enhance the transition of new faculty members into the scholarly role. Evaluation of the project shoes that ability to overcome the nursing challenges influenced the decisions of individual nurses to continue being educator-scholars. Mentoring nurtures the faculty development thus affecting the decisions made by individuals in the nursing profession to either retain their jobs or even resign (Melnyk & Fineout-Overholt, 2011).

To improve my professional growth, I will cooperate with other professionals in this field. These are all other individuals with relevant experience who can teach me a lot. I will take all the advices and instructions given carefully because this is one in a lifetime opportunity, and it will ensure that I gain relevant experience in the professional field of nursing. My practicum might also require me to work in a lab thus ensuring that I practice laboratory skills and other clinical activities. I will attend multiple seminars and discussions where I will learn about various topics in the nursing profession, discuss the various cases one has dealt with so far and share my experiences with other individuals in the practicum. The motive here is to apply al the education learned in class into the practical situations to enable me become an effective nurse after graduation.

My nursing practicum will take a maximum of 15 months, meaning I can complete it any time before the end of 15 months. In my specialization, I will take seven 12 hour shifts for early completion of my practicum. Failure to complete this practicum on time may result in me failing to graduate. It will also result in me not fulfilling my objectives and results for my project proposal. In addition to gain the relevant experience in nursing, this practicum will be a stepping ground for me to come up with authentic results for my project proposal. Thus, nursing practicum is one important aspect of my nursing profession (Brink, 2012).
