Question 1

What are the roles of designers?

The roles of the designers are to ensure that they practice their art using the most responsible methods. This involves performing of extensive research in matters of sustainability in relation to the work they perform. Designers require the use of several materials, some of which may be a hazard to the viability of the environment. These materials contribute the depletion of resources and are thus not ideal. If the country is to take on a stance on staying green they need to ensure that all the industries participate (Combs, p. 23).

This problem is a crisis for designers in that most of their work has been dedicated to the use of resources that were not ecologically sensitive. The change from one technique of design to another is thus less profitable due to the minimization of the resources. Designers have found themselves in a dilemma in that they have to choose between sustaining the environment by staying green and sustaining their businesses by making a profit. Designers can therefore contribute to sustainability by following the rules and regulations that have been put in place by the authorities involved in this industry (Gavin, p. 44).

How can designers contribute to sustainability?

In the case of my favorite designer: Suarez, He contributes to sustainability through the use of more ecologically friendly recourses. He joined the forum in Nantucket that focused on the conduction of art and design so as to preserve the environment. This meant changing most of his designs so that they could be in line with the policies that were put forward during the forum. Designers can also play a significant role by educating their mentors on the importance of sustainability. This would be more effective due to the fact that they have more influence over their peers and followers compared to the ordinary individual (Combs, p. 24).

The solutions to our design problems are technical in that most of the ides that we enforce in terms of design are of a technical nature. If the industry is to come up with ways that will be significant to the change of the art and architecture procedures, they will have to address the technical knowhow placed when coming up with designs. This shows that there is a direct relationship between the art and architecture procedure to the technical application (Gavin, p. 54).

How can ecological literacy make us more sustainable?

Ecological literacy can make us more sustainable in the long run. If all designers apply responsible methods when carrying out their work, the environment will be best suited in terms of sustainability. Sustainability involves the use of the safest materials and procedures that are essential for the provision of a greener environment. Ecological literacy can be done through educating the society about the damage our activities are brining to the environment. If majority of the population was educated on the efficiency that came with going green, the rate of depletion would reduce which in turn would increase the sustainability of the environment (Combs, p. 23).

I am definable dark green in that I support the use of materials that make the environment more viable. It is important to adopt the idea of being environmentally friendly when performing our day to day duties. This should also apply to the profession that we choose to undertake.
