Role of Facebook in Chaos Creation

Social media has become a very important force in the world today. Social media especially Facebook is making the world progress in terms of communication efficiency as well as making work done in a very short time in the right manner. However, it is also responsible for most of the violent scenes witnessed in some places in developing societies. There is a lot of information available on Facebook and the top management of facebook always has to consider what is important to the world and how to make sure that both the shareholders and the stakeholders benefit mutually from the social media platform.

Therefore this makes it very difficult for Facebook to terminate some kind of messaging or activities being carried out on Facebook because even though it might be offensive to the population it might also be beneficial to some people. However, this is a lame reason for not uprooting dirty content but there are other reasons for this. This paper discusses the place of shareholders and stakeholders in Facebook management depending on the various instances which have caused alarm for Facebook to take action

In Myanmar, there had been violence generated by Facebook users. This was an instance whereby Buddhist extremists took to the social media platform to express their anger and their dissatisfaction, therefore, leading to chaos and a lot of tension in that area. Facebook entered Myanmar in 2014 and it was this period when the riots and the chaos came around. Therefore it means that having no Facebook the area was more peaceful and they enjoyed a lot of tranquillity. The CEO of Facebook mark responded to this chaos by stating that Facebook uses an algorithm to show content and therefore the content with the highest number of viewers or interactions is the one that shows on the first page or shows very fast when a person gets into Facebook. This, therefore, is not a question of Facebook promoting violence from the end of the management but ill-willed individuals try to manipulate and use the social media platform for their benefits.

The management of Facebook on its side tries to protect the community from these issues but it is up to the community members to realize that they are the ones responsible for how they use the social media platform. With these issues, the users of Facebook can be said to be the stakeholders while the shareholders are mostly in the management or running of Facebook. The effects of these instances make facebook very difficult to control what its users are doing. However, there are efforts like the employment of individuals who know the local languages to prevent some content from circulating and to prevent individuals from misusing the social media platform.

These efforts are praise-worthy however there remain questions like who is the person to be blamed; it is the facebook management or the Facebook users. From the viewpoint of this chaos and riots, Facebook is indeed run based on the shareholder primacy model because it is the shareholders whom Facebook is concerned about and not so much about stakeholders. This is for a simple reason. First of all, controlling what people say and what is needed in certain geographical locations is very difficult and may not be possible for Facebook. Even if this was possible for Facebook it would be very costly to monitor what individuals talk about and therefore it might not be beneficial to Facebook. Therefore Facebook as a platform allows itself to be used in any manner as long as the shareholders gain what they invested in since the more the platform is used the more beneficial it is.

In conclusion, if Facebook began terminating some communications in all parts of the world then it turns out that its rating goes down and there is a likelihood of the shareholders to suffer which is not a needed consequence. Therefore Facebook is mainly trying to encourage individuals and groups to only share what is important and not what might cause chaos and riots since limiting them would be costly and not beneficial in terms of finance.
