Leading Meetings

Employees with speech impediment may face challenges in their work and communication. The employee with speech impediment will find it difficult to communicate and articulate issues effectively. Based on the case, the employee with speech impediment and the head of department would find it challenging to cope with the presentations’ requirements.

Solving the dilemma

The dilemma of the employee with the speech impediment can be solved through many ways.

Solution 1: use of projector for presentation

The department head should allow the employee to have an oral presentation and use power point slides using a projector. With the projector, the employee will demonstrate the progress made in the project assigned. The employee will be able to back up the projects’ report with photographs, videos and tables. The audience will be able to follow the presentations both orally and visually.

Solution 2: report print outs

The head of the department should also allow the employee with the speech impediment to prepare a summarized report and print out. The print outs should be distributed to the audience to refer to during the presentations. The print outs should be detailed and logically explain what needs to be captured.

Solution 3: pre-emailed report content

Many organizations have today adopted ICTs and e-commerce strategies. The head of the department should allow the employee with the speech impediment to send the project reports through email to the audience before the presentation. During the actual presentation, the employee with speech impediment will do a summary of the key areas. An effective meeting should have its agenda sent in advance and the attendees informed about it. When sending the agenda for the presentations, the contents of the oral presentations by the employee with speech impediment should accompany them. The audience will be able to follow the presentations since they would be required to go through the contents in advance.

Solution 4: allowing more time

Finally, in leading the meetings, the head of the department should give the employee more time than the colleagues. The team members should be lobbied to accept the decision and support the employee with speech impediment. The support would boost the employee’s morale, confidence and urge to prove that speech impediment is not a limitation in workplace.
