Letter to The Editor

This letter is in response to the article titled “Editorial: Facebook, Zuckerberg’s sins now include preying on teens” that appeared on your publication on the 5th of February, 2019. The internet is a source of information and interaction for most of today’s youth and teens. Social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, Snapchat, and Instagram are quite popular. Privacy is virtually nonexistent as such companies gather and share user’s data without their consent. This debate has been raging for a long time.

It is however shocking that Facebook would lower is standards even more to the extent of preying on teenagers who cannot give informed consent. The teens are more than happy to share their personal information for a monthly amount of money. The truth is that they do not even understand what they are doing. What Facebook is doing is illegal, immoral and downright disgusting. Facebook has been involved in several scandalous cases regarding breach of privacy of its users. The company has been embroiled in a mood-control scandal and has been accused of failing to inform the public of theft of user data. The matter of teen manipulation, while it’s a new low, should not come as a shock. As a company, Facebook’s only concern is profit making, and they do not care what they have to do to achieve this.

I agree with the article that laws regulating tech companies are long overdue. It is upon our leaders to ensure that the public is protected from greedy and manipulative companies. Our children need to be safe online. Despite Zuckerberg’s numerous public apologies, it is clear that Facebook has no intention to follow the law and do what is right and ethical. It is high time that Facebook and others are stopped in their tracks. The right to privacy and informed consent must be upheld.
