The fact that the U.S. Department of Justice stated that the federal government, which considers cannabis an illegal drug, “at this time” will be “deferring its right to challenge” the legalization of cannabis in some U.S. states, shows that this is a decision that many people are concerned with. The government have the right to prevent the legalization of cannabis but has instead, because the states involved promised strict regulations, allowed this to happen, presumably as a test period in order to see what the effect of this might be.The 2014 article “How Marijuana legislation will affect drug testing in the workplace” from Forbes, discusses the challenges employers are faced since when medical marijuana became legal. Although this article is concerned with medical marijuana I still think that some of the points in the article is relevant in our case. According to the article drug users are more likely to be sick or injured, are less productive and can be more distracting to co-workers. This shows that, even when cannabis is considered legal in some states, employers will be affected as they might encounter a workforce that is less productive and frequently more absent, which will lead to decreasing business results.This legislation will, I assume, continue to cause controversy and be the cause of concern for many employers. The employers are faced with a new set of legislation that will require them to change many of their policies on for example drug testing. I believe that the federal government will look at how the legalization of cannabis in some states turn out, before making final federal legislation on this matter.
