Read each paragraph and give me your opinion do you agree do you disagree with those 4 paragraphs one for each part and if you agree or disagree why or why not soc1.The gender pay gap is the difference in men and women pay for the same job. the gender pay gap changed over time due to the Equal pay act of 1963, it is a United States labor law, amending the fair labor standards act, the law is in place to abolish wage disparity based on sex. The persistence of the gender pay gap according to Lips, women are more likely than men to sacrifice work hours for increase flexibility in work schedule. women are viewed as less committed than men if they were trying to combine work and family, they were viewed as less committed to their careers. women may work twice as hard as men to prove that they are capable of doing the job. however, they are still not treated fairly when it comes to equal pay. Women deserves to be treated equal and get equal pay in the work place. If women can perform the same duties as men in the work place and get the work done, then women deserve equal pay. There need to be committees that women can get help from when they are treated unfairly on the work place when it comes to getting equal pay. 2.Explain what the gender pay gap is and how it has changed over time. The Gender Pay gap is the difference between men and women’s average full-time equivalent earnings. This gap is occurring due to several issues including the lack of women in senior positions and the overall pay difference for men and women in the same position at private companies. Over time the Gender Pay gap has always been present. A 2014 paper released by NPR.Org shows that Women born in 1943 made 18% less than men at age 27 and 49% less than men at the age of 42 (1). In this same paper, Goldin believes that the gap continues to grow during a woman’s career due to the likelihood that a woman will take time off to raise a family, and notes that the gap shrinks after the prime “child rearing” years. In the article, ‘The Gender Pay Gap: Challenging the Rationalizations,’ Lips argues that the human capital model is insufficient for understanding the persistence of the gender pay gap. Similarly, the AAUW report we read, ‘The Simple Truth About the Gender Pay Gap,’ notes that the pay gap cannot simply be explained by different career and life choices men and women make. Why are the human capital and ‘choices’ argument insufficient? What other factors, such as gender-based discrimination, explain the persistence of the gender pay gap I agree that these studies are hard to take as final scientific data due to the different scenarios during a woman’s career that come about including the decision to have children, time off for maternity leave, and time away from their careers during the time they raise their family. I think that there are just to many variables that occur to get an accurate exact percentage on the wage gap I also thinking coming into this new decade of acceptance and gender identification choices that the “gender pay gap” will no longer be accurate and those taking the data will have to start a new way of tallying these statistics and how they tally “female” and “male” salaries. Considering the consequences of the pay gap, for both women and men, why is it important to address this issue? Discuss the workplace policies you think would be most effective for reducing the pay gap between men and women I think that there is a fine line between privacy issues and open salary information that could help here. I think posting positions and how much individuals are making is always helpful. I come from a career where our salaries and wages are based on position and in a contract. There is no difference between the sexes, only positions and years of service. Law Enforcement is like that up until you are in a Chief position and have to argue for your salary and/or pay. I think having a policy in place that makes wages and salary transparent takes the guessing game away from those who feel they are being shorted in their salary.3. Through 1987 and again in 1993, enormous marches on Washington drew as many as 1 million gay right supporters. After the male community was killed by the AIDS epidemic, demands for medical funding led to renewed alliances between men and women. Gay men and lesbians in the service resulted in an uncomfortable compromise “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” as an alternative to decades of military witch-hunts and dishonorable discharges. In the last decade of the 20th century, actress Ellen DeGeneres came out on television in ’97 about her sexual preference. This changed mind sets of so many gays and lesbians that soon after, other celebrities had felt more comfortable to come out about their sexual preference. To this day, gay and lesbians are still fighting for their rights. There are some states that still haven’t passed the right to marriage.4. If we look at the attitudes towards homosexuality and changes in the degree of prejudice and discrimination directed toward gay, lesbian, and bisexual individuals in American society since the 1950’s, we would see a big change in the entire spectrum. To speak on the subject alone was taboo. It was definitely a part of history and has always been in existence. To talk about it now in public as a regular conversation such as what are you having for dinner tonight is not something you would be in shock to hear at a public or private function. Is it more acceptable to speak about, yes, but is it still looked upon as something that brings up securities, yes as well! In respect to the concepts of acculturation, primary structural assimilation, and secondary structural assimilation applying to sexual minorities the Lesbians, Gays, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) communities are being included in talks more publicly than 20 years ago. The late 90’s is what this learner would consider the mass acceptance of hearing someone coming out to disclose their sexual preference. Primary structural assimilation is highly prevalent today. You can see the acceptance of a white gay male that is not flamboyant before you see the acceptance of white gay (lesbian) female. The women and men in this group still face barriers at home and even in schools, but it has become more acceptable with the clause that “they do not force their beliefs on them”. Healey & Obrien (2015), there is still anti-gay American’s despite the LGBT coming “out” and building their own families and having those relationships that they probably wouldn’t have had in the middle of the 20th century, but this is a step of improvement for this country in regards to being open to differences. Secondary structural assimilation applying to sexual minorities in the education field still shows sexism. Boys are called upon more in school and praised more than girls and the girls are still pushed towards more jobs that focus on care giving. When it comes to political power women are still less represented in elected office although the voting power of women is equal to the men per Healey & Obrien (2015). Jobs and income has seen an improvement but you still have employers that offer jobs to women that are nurturing or not as hard labor and income is not at the same pay as their male counter parts. When you compare all of this to those that are of the Black and Hispanic race, you can see a comparison. Blacks and Hispanics may be included in the roundtable meetings, but are their votes for certain issues counted? You will see the acceptance of Black and Hispanic men first before you see them accept the Black and Hispanic Women for certain positions or even as far as how they are looked upon in sports. In this learner opinion, the secondary structural assimilation goes hand in hand with everything else. You will still see White male as the elite when it comes to males and then followed by the women then to the Black Man followed by the women. Is it an improvement from 60 years ago, yes, but still need a lot of work!
