Please respond to this post in 4 sentences or more. I do feel labeling cetain people with dis-orders is needed and can help – not only the person but also others to understand. An example of this – my kids were 5 & 7 at the time and we were in the grocery store: The argument was which popcorn should be purchased as the 7 year old insisted he should chose as he was older. Around this time a person with down syndrome walked by and the popcorn suddenly lost its appeal. The questions were many and kept coming from my kids -I explained in detail as we sat and ate lunch. It became more difficult when I was asked “why were they like this – what happen” Because we gave this a name, we labeled it – it made it easier to understand and truthfully help educated my kids and they are sympathetic to it. So yes at times its a benefit: its when we as people label the incorrect way Whats wrong with them? We use words we should not – retard – things that not only demoralizes the situation but also proves to show our ignorance as people. My son is 11 now and has sensory issues, very large ones: His socks must be very tight, no tags on shirts, since birth he will only wear 1 color shoes and he has always combed his hairstraight down, like a bowl. His hair always inside make me laugh: yet to him if he combs it another way he is completely uncomfortable and can not function. The issues go on and can easily take up the day – as we learned him and what was going on we have learned to work around them and function as a family. Frustrations? Sure butBy labelling this and discussing it we found ways to live with it.
