In terms of structure, the paper should be the sort of “5-paragraph essay” style you learned in high school (though it can have more or less than 5 paragraphs depending on your argument). All papers should include an introductory paragraph that situates your paper and establishes your thesis, multiple argumentative paragraphs that each deal with one topic that supports your thesis, and a concluding paragraph that wraps up your paper. All papers must include quotations from the relevant texts to support your arguments. All papers must include a bibliography. If you do not have physical copies of the books, you are required to use the online versions of the Loeb translations (found here [http://library.ohio-state.edu/record=e1001681~S7] for your convenience). Citations should include the name of the text and the page number in a footnote, e.g. Iliad, pg. 5. You may choose from the following topics. Compare and contrast the importance of kleos and nostos in the Iliad and the Odyssey. The Muses are very important in early epic poetry. How does Hesiod use them differently than Homer does? Be sure to include information found not only in the poems’ proems. What are major structural differences between epic poetry and Athenian tragedy (other than that epic poetry is recited whereas tragedy is performed by actors)?
