The reproductive system is very important system because it contains the sex organs which give an organism life. We have been educated on the reproductive system throughout middle school, high school, and college. Although I don’t watch Grey’s Anatomy or Chicago Fire, I have come across different medical terms associated to the reproductive system through my line of work within the medical field. I can remember a time when we had a female patient come in with a complaining of severe pelvic pain, and it often got worse during her menstrual cycle and lasted days after. She had been treated for pain before, but she noticed that this pain was different from any she has previous felt and it included pain during sexual intercourse and bleeding even after her menstrual cycle was over. After getting her patient history, the doctors decided to run a few labs. After conducting a pelvic exam and ultrasound, it was concluded that she had endometriosis. At that point, it was my first time hearing of this disorder so I decided to break the word down in order to obtain a better meaning. Endo= within, metr(o)= uterus/womb, osis= abnormal condition. Endometriosis is a painful disorder where tissue grows outside the uterus. Due to this tissue has no way to exit your body, it becomes trapped within your body and causes surrounding tissue to become irritated, eventually developing scar tissue and other adhesions. The patient’s endometriosis was caused by retrograde menstruation; which occurs when menstrual blood containing endometrial cells flows back through the fallopian tubes and into the pelvic cavity instead of out of the body. These endometrial cells attach to the pelvic walls and other pelvic organs, where they grow and continue to thicken and bleed over the course of each menstrual cycle. In the end, I continue to come across medical terms that I had to decipher on a day to day basis.
