Group at risk of poor health can be defined as individual or group of people that are exposed to health issues maybe due to lifestyles or the condition the group/individual find him/herself. People at risk of poor health can still have the ability to make changes that would have predisposed them from been affected by poor health issues. For example, people that smokes have a higher risk of developing cancer, and obese people have a higher risk of developing heart disease, but still with simple lifestyle changes, this group of people can still have a healthy life. Again bedbound patients are at higher risk of developing pressure ulcer, but can be prevented if healthcare staff initiates some measures to prevent pressure ulcer. While vulnerable groups are those group of people that have the likelihood of been affected with health condition. For example, elderly people and children are more vulnerable of been abused maybe due to their weakness and strength or other factors that surrounds them, in this case of vulnerability the victim most of the times don’t have the choice but because of the situations they found themselves they are made vulnerable to their victims.

Advocating for these group is necessary and needed, because majority of them don’t have the knowledge and the understanding of the right thing to do and they lack the support and encouragement needed to fight through especially with those that are at risk and vulnerable to poor health. Advocating for these group will help create awareness, education on health promotion and provide support and encouragement needed by these group. And also advocating for these will also be beneficial to people involved, because it will help them know the right thing to do when they are faced with vulnerable situation.

THE ROLE OF A NURSE IN ADVOCATING FOR THE RISK AND VULNERABLE GROUP IN OUR SOCIETY.

“The role of advocate can require a nurse to act as a communicator, liaison, educator, interpreter and caregiver. The three core values help from the basis of nursing advocacy: preserving patient dignity, patient equality, and freedom from suffering” (Jackson university, 2016)

• PRESERVING PATIENT DIGNITY – “Every person has a right to be treated with honor and respect” (Jackson university, 2016). As a nurse advocating for the risk and vulnerable group in our society, will be fighting for every person in these group to be seen as individual not as a disease condition they present with and also to have the right to be involved in any health decision made by healthcare providers and make sure that their dignity is maintained throughout the period of providing care.
• PATIENT EQUALITY- As a nurse, will advocate for equality and human right, no matter the age, race, sexuality or health issues an individual has, that he/she still deserves the right to be seen as equal like every other person.
• FREEDOM FROM SUFFERNG- ‘’Many nurses list a desire to help others as a major factor in their decision to enter the profession” (Jackson university, 2016), so as a nurse advocating for this group will ensure relief from emotional or physical suffering from these group.
