Jim has been employed, on probation, for less than a year in his first graduate position as a marketing officer in a large pharmaceutical company. His aptitude and strong work ethic have been recognised by his department manager and Jim has been offered a permanent appointment with a generous increase in his salary. However, the permanent appointment is conditional on Jim’s ability to win funding and successfully manage an important project This project involves overseeing the development and distribution of a new drug that will enable diet and exercise-free weight loss to users. Given the growing obesity problem in the country, the drug has the potential for significant commercial success. Jim needs to negotiate with his department manager for amendments to the advisory documents that will be provided to potential clinical-trial volunteers. Jim was shocked when his personal research uncovered an online report that there are several serious side effects of the new drug, such as stomach ulcers, that may develop with excessive use. After a cursory read, he rushes into his manager’s office without pausing at the Personal Assistant’s desk. As Jim bursts into the room he exclaims about the exclusion of the reported side effects in the volunteers’ documents. In response, the manager, who was not expecting the outburst, calmly explains that, though clinical trials are mandatory for all new drugs, the well-paid volunteers will sign a waiver acknowledging the risks before taking part. He goes on to say that the company is not legally required to divulge any further information and will be legally protected by the waiver. Jim barely listens and stubbornly insists the side effects must be documented for potential volunteers. Faced with Jim’s inflexibility, the manager quickly offers to transfer the job of project coordination from Jim to another, more cooperative colleague. Suddenly, Jim realises he could lose the chance of a permanent appointment. Furthermore, his failure in this position will be noted in his performance records. In despair, he cries, “You can’t do this to me after all the hard
