We just had a presidential election a couple of years ago…our 57th in fact (and another one next year). For nearly as long as we have used the Electoral College system to select the President of the United States there has been discussion about reform. As a matter of fact, prior to the ratification of the Constitution the Anti-Federalists proposed the president by elected by a simple majority of the popular vote. This essay will require you to read Anti Federalist #72 and Federalist #68 (read them in that order, Federalist #68 is Alexander Hamilton’s response to Republics, the pen-name used by an anonymous Anti-Federalist author). What do you think? Should we keep the Electoral College system or should the people of the US directly elect the president? Address the strengths and weaknesses of both methods of election as well as a defence of your opinion.
