Cultural competence is very important in nursing because nurses see a wide variety of patients who come from many different backgrounds. South Florida has a very diverse population and make of the residents are very strict when it comes to their culture. Depending on how they are approached or spoken to they may feel disrespected. It is shown that nurse who take into account a patient’s culture and caters to that culture has a better relationship with their patient and the patient feel more comfortable (Kyounh & Hyeonkyeong, 2016). A simple cultural assessment tool that can be used is a questionnaire which the person answering the questions will explain about their culture. This can help the healthcare providers to know what the patient culture is and how to care for this patient in a nonoffending way. This type of questions can be asked on admission to the hospital. An example would be when questioning about diet the nurse will learn if the patient requires a vegetarian, no red meat, or kosher diet. Most nurses learn about different cultures when they are in school and experience the different cultures in their clinical experience (Rector, 2018). The more cultures a nurse learns about the better care they can give to patients of different backgrounds.
