Alice Munros Corrie, has described very many characters that bring out different perspective of life. The main characters in this short story are Corrie, Mr. Calton and Howard Ritchie. They together bring out the main idea which is the theme in this short story. The theme of Religion.
Religion is brought out intensely in this short story. Religion can be described in different aspects. Religion includes and is not limited to, Christianity, Islam, Hindu and the traditional believes. In this short story though, we focus on Christianity. We start by learning that Mr. Colton is a religious man. He supports Christianity. He attended the Methodist church to the core and never kept liquor in the house. This is brought to contrast when the daughter Corrie, produces a cigarette and share it with the visitor Howard.
Howard is described as an architect who is restoring the tower of the Anglican Church. This also brings out the religion where apart from the Methodist church that is attended there is still the Anglican Church. This shows that the religion is diverse. The Anglican is described by Mr. Calton as people who could not think of restoring the tower by use of an architect but would rather look for a carpenter who would bring some substandard church.
Corrie and Howard were together taking a walk to the river bank where she had a row boat and shared their past experiences.
Howard was brought up in a very religious home setting. She had only slept with two women whole his life Corrie on the other hand being brought up by a very religious father from the Methodist church is also religious though not as staunch as his father. She described herself as her virgin. Christianity views virginity as a very important aspect of life.
Though Corrie was not a virgin she described herself as one. They slept together. This made Howard now have two people. His wife and now Corrie. Corries father, Mr. Calton had stroke and there was this nurse Lillian Wolfe, who came to take care o her. Lillian would clear the table and kitchen when Corries father died Corrie had to give her money to enroll to typing lessons. Though she did not do it for she continued doing household chores. This made her get to meet Howard with his wife in a dinner they had been invited in the household where she worked,
People who believe in religion know very well that it is god that gives life and the one that takes but we realize that Corrie is planning with Howard to kill Lillian for she had found out that Howard was married to a very rich and influential lady. It is against Christianity to kill a person. Lillian blackmails them and asks for money so that she can keep her mouth shut. Corrie wants to view it simply as paying the bills so that she doesnt feel the temptation of killing her. Corrie wanted to suggest doing it during supper but she declines and thinks otherwise. Lillian goes away and is not seen by either in long time.
Religion is brought out when we have this new church in town known s the church of the lords anointed. This is what flourished in the town what her father called freak religions Christianity normally they bury their dead where service is carried out at the funeral and someone is buried. Thats what happened to Lillian.
Christianity is also brought out when we have another church which comes up to the likes of the united church and the Presbyterian Church.
As Corries father had observed, the Anglican Church had closed ages ago. Christians have ministers.
This s seen in Lillians burial when a lady comes to Corrie and describes herself as a minister .later that evening writes letter to Howard who having a good time with his family and informs him of the death of Lillian and describes the minister as Milady.
Christians believe that once their purpose here on earth is over they are going to die one day. So death has been seen in a number of instances. We first see the death of Corries father who dies of stroke. Although there is a nurse taking care of him still the Christian saying that his purpose on earth is over he dies.
There is also the death of Corries mother who dies of polio. Corrie does not remember much of her for she died when she was quite young. There is also the death of Lillian who dies. She is praised of being a very good person who knows how to live with people. Christians bury their people and jimmy was the one who dug their graves.
Christianity is a theme that has been brought out exhaustively in this short story. It has described the many different types of denominations and how they practice and come to be. Characters has described Christianity and showed how it does in many of its aspects.
Corrie being the main character and bearing the title of the short story has brought about the practices of Christians. Though she is not involved fully in Christianity she describes her father has one. He is also a main character though he dies early in the text and does not continue with the short story.
Howard on the other hand brings out Christianity where he describes himself as being brought up in a Christian family and that he does not believe having more than one wife. But he is tempted by Corrie who describes herself as a virgin which is a Christian virtue bit we clearly we see that she is not. Lillian also brings out Christian values when she dies and her funeral is conducted by a church. The church being present indicates that Lillian is someone who is into church.
The theme of religion and in particular Christianity has been really brought out in this Munros Corrie. It is educative and brings out the literary aspect of the short story.
