Assignment 1: Treatment of Criminal Offenders

Treatment of the incarcerated typically poses special challenges that are unique to correctional settings. The forensic mental health professional cannot be “just” a clinician or “just” a mental health professional. As a forensic mental health professional, you will often need to balance clinical considerations with correctional considerations. Therefore, awareness of how correctional realities and clinical issues interact is essential for success in the field.

Tasks:

Using at least three scholarly resources from the professional literature, research clinical and correctional considerations when treating offenders. The literature may include the Argosy University online library resources; relevant textbooks; peer-reviewed journal articles; and websites created by professional organizations, agencies, or institutions (.edu, .org, or .gov).

In a minimum of 300 words, respond to the following:

• Explain how the clinical treatment of offenders is impacted by correctional concerns.
• Provide three examples of how correctional concerns can impact treatment interventions.
