In-depth Article Review

(Due May 2)

Formatting: Each page should be double spaced with 1” margins on all sides. Your assignment should be a maximum of 5 pages in length. Use 12-size font, Times New Roman.

Citations: You must provide an appropriate APA style citation for the study you’re reviewing at the top of the page.

Instructions

You must select one article to review and critique. Use the questions below to guide your review and critique. You should answer each of the questions. You may do this in paragraph form or by going question by question. If you use the paragraph format keep the main headings in your assignment (background, methods, results, discussion and conclusion) to guide the reader.

The goal of this assignment is to demonstrate that you understand the article and can use the terms and concepts we have learned in class to critique it. Please do not quote from the study; quoting from the study does not demonstrate to me your understanding of the study or application of course concepts.

Part 1: Understanding the Article

  • Background
    • What is the research question?
    • Does the background section summarize all the relevant research about this topic?
    • Does it make a clear case for why the research is important?
  • Methods
    • Was the study a primary, secondary or tertiary study?
    • What is the study design? How do you know this is the study design?
    • Population
      • What population was studied? How were these participants recruited?
      • How many participants were included?
      • Were there losses to follow-up?
    • Measurement
      • Complete the table below for each variable that is included in the study.
    • Statistical methods
      • What statistical measures did they use? (You don’t have to know everything – just give a brief summary. Please do not repeat terms used in the paper itself that you do not understand; I would rather this section be brief than that you write a lot of things you don’t understand.)
      • What, if any, variables did they adjust for? Why did they adjust for these variables?
  • Results
    • Table 1
      • Review each of the sections of table 1. What do they tell you about the population included in the study?
      • If the study compares groups, are there differences in the groups at baseline?
    • Additional tables and figures
      • For each additional table, summarize the main idea of that table.
      • Are there any findings in the table statistically significant? How do you know?
      • Interpret the major findings using your own words.
  • Discussion& Conclusion
    • Do they appropriately interpret their results?
    • What strengths and limitations do they note?
    • Does the conclusion appropriately summarize the whole paper?
    • If they mention any next steps are you in agreement with them?

Variable

How measured or derived?

Part 2: Critiquing the Article

Now that you understand the article, critique it using the following questions:

  • Is the research question an important one? Does the background make a good case for why we want to know the answer to this question?
  • What are the strengths of the methods that were used? Be sure to consider the population, measurement and statistical methods.
  • What are the weaknesses of the methods that were used? Be sure to consider the population, measurement and statistical methods.
  • Are the results clearly presented? Can you follow them easily?
  • Does the discussion accurately interpret the results of the study?
  • Have they noted all the relevant strengths and limitations?
  • Is the conclusion appropriate for the rest of the paper?
