• Wars can be fought on the basis of incomplete information, what prevents states from revealing their true capabilities and resolve to adversaries? For example, before the 2003 invasion of Iraq, why did Saddam Hussein hide the fact that he did not have weapons of mass destruction? Why did some countries believe that he had no such weapons, while others were certain that he did?

• War gets more attention than does peace, even though many disputes between states are settled peacefully. What important international conflicts were resolved without war? What concessions were states able to extract from each other? What prevented these conflicts from escalating into war?

• One explanation for the long peace of the Cold War is the presence of nuclear weapons. How might nuclear weapons have contributed to the long peace? Could nuclear proliferation today decrease the incidence of violent interstate conflict? What factors would make the peaceful aspects of nuclear weapons less likely to materialize?

• What are the differences between insurgency and terrorism as forms of political violence? How do the goals, audiences, and tactics of insurgents and terrorists differ from each other? How are these forms of violence similar to each other? Does it make sense for states to develop distinct policies for countering insurgency and for countering terrorism, or should such policies be very similar?
• Collectively, the international community has ignored the threats that organizations like ISIS and al-Qaeda pose to the international community. Why have states ignored the problem? Why have states, particularly those under the greatest threat from these organizations, been hesitant to get involved?

War is inevitable. Using the levels of analysis to help explain the causes of war, I’ll start with what I think is the easiest to understand, an individual level. The leader of a state being ill, either physically or mentally, has the utmost impact on whether or not countries will go to war. If a president has a personality disorder or is in a state of manic, they may make decisions that aren’t in the country’s best interest. Likewise, if the president is in the early stages of dementia, then they could drastically change the tides between states and may eventually cause conflict.

” Joseph Stalin suffered from a series of mental issues including paranoid personality disorder and manic depression. Also, in his diaries Myasnikov claims that Stalin suffered from atherosclerosis (the hardening of the arteries), which made his mental health even more fragile. This actually, could have been a factor in his political decision-making and violent actions”(Theodoros, 2018).

On a State Level of Analysis, tensions could rise if one state is not keep it together on their own. They will want aid from other states that are more advanced and wealthy. This could cause problems for the state that is now being looked to for help because their citizens want their money to be used for their own personal reasons. It can also make that country look bad if they do not lend a hand to a less fortunate country. This just happened in Turkey recently, when the US pulled troops out of Syria. This ties into the System Level of Analysis. Economically, as long as all states are doing well, there would be little to no conflict. It is when one country’s economy is doing poorly, especially a more powerful one, that you will see a global domino effect.
