identify a theme in that story worth exploring. Then re-read with your thematic question in mind, identifying all the passages that have a bearing on your theme. Do all this BEFORE beginning to shape your argument. This process will enable you the best chance of having sufficient data with which to make a compelling argument. As I have argued throughout this course, there is a view of literature that claims it does two main things: literature opens a window to the larger world (larger in the sense of looking beyond our own personal experience), and it also provides a mirror in which we can gaze to discover things about ourselves. After you have chosen a story and done the work to hone your awareness of the theme you find interesting in that story, write an argument in which you demonstrate the two views (window and mirror) the story offers for your theme.
