Report involving the development of a business case for a new tissue engineered product

Paper instructions:
The description of paper is given below, together with word limits and constrains. I would like to drag attention to some particular points. The paper should be highly scientific and therefore FULLY REFERENCED IN THE NATURE JOURNAL STYLE. I would prefer use of published papers of existing tissue engineering products. In case you cannot access a specific scientific paper, please send me its name, so that I can find it for you from my database accesses. The business casing part of the paper should clearly show how much starting capital is required, when will the product launch and how will it make profits in the long term. Please note that most of this paper should focus on comparison of existing products and technologies involved from a tissue engineer’s perspective as it is highlighted in the mark allocation section below. In other words, the paper should be 80% scientific and 20% business. In case you would like to have a better idea, I can share some lecture slides and documents over Drop-box. The deadline is 03/01/2014 (first Friday of 2014), so there is time and I prefer to obtain a mark in the range 80% €“ 90% from this coursework (maybe even higher if possible:-) ).********************

Marking criteria for report involving the development of a business case for a new tissue engineered product:

There is an enormous clinical demand for organs and tissues available for transplantation to restore the health of NHS patients suffering from disease in the UK. Thus, a better healthcare in an aging population can only improve as long as companies develop tissue engineering products that are commercially available. However, the relatively poor success rate of companies in the tissue engineering field has led to products which have not been fully commercialized. These include products available for a number of damaged tissues including skin, cartilage, bone, kidney, liver and pancreas. In aIDition, many companies have floundered on lack of continued investment developing products from research and development.

You should write your report from the perspective of a biomedical engineer. You should choose one of the following products to design a business case:

1. Skin
2. Cartilage
3. Bone

Marks will be awarded on the following:

1. In the last decade, what lessons have been learned and what improvements could be made in developing a range of successful tissue engineering products (500 words max).
2. You should evaluate the overall existing commercial products (500 words max).
3. The scientific basis underpinning the products, with particular reference to cell source, biomaterial delivery vehicle and the use of growth factors or other types of stimuli such as physical forces (500 words max).
4. You should include a description of the critical technologies available to develop products and evaluate their short and long term performances (250 words max).
5. You should discuss how best to market the products for both financial support and to ensure acceptance by clinical end-users (250 words max)
6. In your report, provide specific examples to clinical problems (250 words max)
