NUS 3315 Midterm Exam
Respond to each of the following short answer items. Your responses should be thorough and written in complete sentences. Provide citations from all sources used. You are encouraged to used sources other than the lecture notes when writing your responses. You are expected to work individually on this exam. The exam should be submitted in Moodle by the due date on your calendar. Exam is worth 100 points.

1.Illustrate and explain coronary artery circulation and the role that risk factors such as hyperlipidemia and smoking have on ischemia. Be sure to include information about changes in micro circulation and auto regulation. (20 points)

2.Illustrate blood flow through the heart and describe the effects of systemic and pulmonary hypertension on ventricular size and remodeling. Describe one of the congenital heart defects discussed in class and describe its effects on the infant. (20 points)

3.You are asked to give a talk to a community group about heart health. A miIDle aged female African American participant says that her doctor told her she has a salt intolerance. She asks you to explain what her primary care provider meant. What would you tell her? (20 points)

4.You are precepting a new nurse in MICU who is caring for an adult patient in respiratory distress following bowel resection. The patients CVP is 5, PCWP is 10. The nurse tells you she hears crackles in the chest and the chest xray showed a white out. The patients ABG report shows pH 7.30, PCO2 35, PO2 72, HCO3 22. She determines the patient is in pulmonary edema and wants to call the doctor for an order for Lasix. How would you respond? Does the patient meet the criteria for ARDS? Explain the pathogenesis of ARDS to the new nurse. (20 points)

5.Explain how the pathogenesis of hypovolemic, anaphylactic, and neurogenic shock all lead to poor tissue perfusion. Explain the mechanism whereby poor tissue perfusion leads to metabolic acidosis. (20 points)
