This assignment asks you to consider how your own way of “doing gender” has been socially constructed. However, your analysis is not exclusively about gender. Bringing together social construction theory with intersectionality, you will critically discuss how one other aspect of your identity has influenced how your gender is constructed. For example, a set of religious beliefs may affect expectations for doing gender, or your racial identity might shape ideas about how to do gender.

Some identity categories you might consider include race, sexuality/sexual orientation, economic status, disability, religious affiliation, cultural identity, age, or nationality. Your essay will only be successful if it clearly explains the concepts of social construction and intersectionality and clearly conveys how those concepts apply to your personal example. Your essay should use at least two readings “The Social Construction of Race,” Ian Haney López argues, “social renditions of masculinity and femininity are inseverable a part of racial constructs, just as racial stereotypes invariably embody some elements of sexual identity” (55).
