The American Cancer Society is a non-profit organization that provides so many services to the patients and family members afflicted by cancer. As stated on their About Ussection, it states, “At the American Cancer Society, we’re on a mission to free the world from cancer. Until we do, we’ll be funding and conducting research, sharing expert information, supporting patients, and spreading the word about prevention.” (American Cancer Society, 2019). If I had a friend or a family member that had just been diagnosed with cancer, I would refer them to the organization’s plethora of information regarding types of cancer, treatment, and many other important information such as managing side effects of medication, coping among others. Perhaps my favorite part of the website though is the Support feature wherein you can locate support groups around your area for many types of support groups including cancer support groups, wigs for less, breast prostheses among many more.

I think as the controllable risk factors for cancer are being addressed by many individuals as more information is disseminated, these factors such as smoking, alcohol consumption, diet and exercise can all contribute for the better (or the worse) to the yearly incidence and mortality rates. Over time, I think more policy and practice changes will be geared to these risk factors as some of they are already in many hospitals. Many hospitals have smoking cessation and alcohol cessation programs via education during acute care stay.

Cancer cells biology and metastasis is one of the programs funded by the American Cancer Society that is very important as it deals with the cancer cells’ makeup and spread in a chemical level. Manipulation of the many factors that make a cancer cell cancerous can drive treatment of the disease to hopefully permanently eliminate or cure cancer. “For example, scientists explore the mechanisms that regulate cancer cell growth, death, and movement to new sites.” (American Cancer Society, 2019).
