Watch William Ury’s TED Talk, “Getting from No to Yes” and then respond to the following:
William Ury argues that there is always a third side in any conflict. What do you think he meant? Give an example from a current event or news story to illustrate. Describe the “two sides†in the conflict, and then describe the constructive role that someone (a friend, ally, family member, neighbor, community member) could play in helping to resolve the conflict.
Ury tells us that “The third side helps us go to the balcony, which is a metaphor for a place of perspective, where we can keep our eyes on the prize.†Using your example from question 1, what perspectives might be missed without a “third side†focus?
After he describes the “Abraham path,†Ury says, “…to change the game, you have to change the frame, the way we see things — to change the frame from hostility to hospitality, from terrorism to tourism.†How could you, personally, help to change the frame for those involved in the conflict you described in question 1?
